To-do list for today

Already completed, as of 11:30am. I really want to be an early morning person. So much progress!:

• Purchase bread from bakery
• Pick up milk, butter, and deodorant from supermarket
• Buy breakfast sandwich from bagel shop
• Ride bike to Coffee Emporium
• Research Make a Difference Day project ideas and prepare cheat sheet for meeting tonight
• Complete cover letter and submit full application package for food delivery co-op position
• Reschedule coffee get-together with Grace from today to tomorrow instead
• Contact Uptown for request to discuss Make a Difference Day partnership after tomorrow’s meeting
• Email Product Line Manager at Saucony about blog
• Submit late application for Interactive Marketing Specialist position
• Stop the library to print agenda, treasurer’s report, and cheat sheet for MaDD information.

Outstanding tasks for the rest of the day:

1. Be on time for final UHS appointment at 1pm
2. Include suggested revisions into Poverty in Utah paper
3. Be on time for tonight’s community council meeting and present ideas and meeting times for Make a Difference Day project planning
4. Start and finish laundry

We’ll see if I come up with anything else. Until then, cheers with my coffee in hand.

A night of discovery

As I got home today, I had the urge to listen to www.radioxy.com. It had been several years since I tuned in with any extended commitment. I set up my Bose Wave Radio in the kitchen, and plugged my Blaze Android phone into it. Short story, long—I now really want to check out more from The Brilliant Green, The Temper Trap, and Baby Grand. Other highlights were The Clash and The Buzzcocks, of course. What a great playlist of songs over the past hour. (Right now, “So Many Days” from California Oranges is playing. So good. I feel like they were listed on either a Moshi Moshi compilation that I can’t find anywhere.)

This was one fun night. Adam D was in town from Cleveland, where he took a job for the meantime. His girlfriend is in school in Atlanta, so it seems he went in the wrong direction geographically. But he can’t get enough of Cincy…or at least karaoke with friends in Cincy. Friends got to Maloney’s East extremely early to save a long row of tables down the center of the place. So awesome.

I decided to give “Hey Now Now” a try, for the first time, a Top 40 single that was on Q102 for a few weeks back in 1998. I had Kula Shaker’s “Hey Dude” as my first song, but I had a feeling the Swirl song would be a lot of fun. Boy, was I right. I screwed up on a couple parts, but I really plan to do it every Saturday night. It’s a very balanced song with great high note parts and very upbeat. The crowd response was amazing. I got chills when they responded to the high shrieks. 

After a few months giving it a rest, I gave “Fly from the Inside” another try. It was an old standby I did many times at Southgate House. The last time I tried it at Maloney’s East, my voice wasn’t ready and it turned out to be a disaster. This time—much better. Again, the crowd response was really great, especially after holding some extremely long notes. Pretty miraculous that I pulled it off while still having some stuffiness in my nose and sinuses.

And finally, I did Eve 6’s “Promise”. I really enjoy doing this one because it’s full of tongue-twisters, and I can actually execute on it very well. Generally, I’ll screw up on fast vocal parts, so this is my outlet for that kind of song. “Why you gotta key the fan on high when it’s cold outside. Just wanna let you know that I’m still a fan…get it?” Ha.

A really great evening. And I’m feeling great today too. I don’t know what it is about yesterday and today, feeling so good. Perhaps my body just said, “Hey, I’ve been sick for a week. Let’s go ape!” I’m okay with that.

Dick Bingo Karaoke Log - 01/26/11

I think this was the first karaoke night in a long while during which I only did songs recorded before 1994. It was January’s birthday, and there was a different mood in the air, last night. Well, that and I am still trying to get over the aftermath of a horrible sickness. It’s all about congestion now. Beau got up there with me to do the Kate parts of “Candy”, which really pleased me. I didn’t know anyone in the room knew the words, and I always wanted to do the duet with someone, rather than doing it all myself. Sort of gave me a rest too.Muffin’s request of “Only” really turned out well, despite the circumstances. Waking up wasn’t so easy though.
